Don & Jane 🤩🥳 #ggr2026 Pat Lawless made history as the first Irish entrant in the McIntyre Golden Globe Race — a solo, non-stop, unassisted round-the-world sailing challenge using only technology available in 1968. A retired fisherman and carpenter from Kerry, Pat took on the 2022 edition of the race in memory of his father, who became the first Irishman to sail solo around the world in 1996. Sailing aboard Green Rebel, Pat battled storms, isolation, and mechanical failure in one of the world’s most demanding sporting events. But 1,200 miles west of Cape Town, disaster struck. A critical failure in his self-steering system made it unsafe to continue. Forced to retire, Pat made landfall in South Africa — but not before proving his determination, seamanship, and spirit.
