Forecast Cherry Blossom blooms with Science! Karl Haro von Mogel talks to Kenta Shirasawa, Senior Scientist at the Kazusa DNA Research Institute in Japan. Kenta studies the biology and genetics of Sakura, prized for its beautiful and culturally important blooms, and wants to know when the blossoms will open each year. He has figured out that three genes in the flower buds can be used to predict when the flowers will open! So his team is developing an at-home kit that can be used to test the buds of Yoshino Cherry trees and tell you when your cherry blossoms will open, up to 21 days before flowering. Kenta and his team will be using these kits next year in 2024 to predict the Sakura blooms across Japan and they hope it will be the most accurate flowering forecast ever!
