This procedure is a minimally invasive surgical technique to remove a pterygium. The surgery is performed under topical anaesthesia. The surgeon carefully excises the pterygium tissue from the surface of the eye. Following this, a piece of healthy conjunctival autograft, is harvested. This graft is then placed over the area where the pterygium was removed to prevent recurrence. Patients own blood is used to anchor the graft in place. This sutureless approach leads to a quicker recovery, less post-operative discomfort, and a better cosmetic outcome. Key terms: Pterygium: A non-cancerous growth that can form on the conjunctiva and extend to the cornea, often shaped like a wing or wedge. Conjunctival Autograft: A piece of a patient's own conjunctiva tissue that is used as a graft to repair the surgical site. Using the patient's own tissue significantly reduces the risk of rejection. Topical Anaesthesia: The use of anaesthetic drops to numb the surface of the eye, allowing the patient to remain awake during the surgery. This is less invasive and has fewer side effects than general anaesthesia. Sutureless: This refers to the use of a biological glue, such as fibrin glue, to attach the graft instead of traditional sutures (stitches). This reduces operative time, post-operative inflammation and discomfort, and provides a smoother recovery. The procedure is highly effective in treating pterygium and is the gold standard for reducing the rate of recurrence. The use of a sutureless technique has become increasingly popular due to its benefits in patient comfort and recovery.
