Venerable Segonzac-based Cognac producer Frapin just got themselves a new US importer in the form of PM Spirits - the fine folks who handle Rochelt, Père Labat, L'Encantada, d'Aurensan, plus other nerdy spirits of the sort - and before they begin to accordingly roll out crazy single-vintage high proof monsters, I figured it would be fun to work through a two-miniature set from their current range. (It doesn't hurt that, full confession, no-notes reviews like these are a way for me to finish new content quickly when I'm swamped.) But since it would be no fun for me to just turn on the camera, give quick notes/scores on two minis, and lecture one more time about how much 40% bottling strengths hurt a spirit, I'm throwing in a wild card: Henny VS, the absolute best-selling Cognac in the world. Stats: Hennessy Very Special Cognac (L116153, probably bottled circa 2020, 2+ years old; 40% ABV), 76/100 Frapin VSOP Cognac Grande Champagne Premier Cru (bottled 2019 or so, 4+ years old; 40% ABV), 83+/100 Frapin XO VIP Cognac Grande Champagne Premier Cru (bottled 2019 or so, so 10+ years old after the 2018 classification change; 40% ABV), 84/100 Special guest appearance by the half-bottle of D'Ussé VSOP I reviewed way back in • Intro to Cognac Part 1, the 40%-ers: D'Uss... . Even with its unfortunate 40% presentation the Frapin line is pretty nice. It's proper Cognac, and it benefits enormously from a lack of overt dosage - which isn't to say it isn't wonderfully honeyed and oaky and desserty, which it is. Between the two I'd probably save a few bucks grab the VSOP, unless I was a maniac for that coffee-woody thing on the back end of the XO. These are good, and I'm certain they'll be doing better in short order But then there's the Henny, which I take no pleasure in taking down. It's a bit of an icon, after all, and with the kind of (often vaguely racist) trash talk it attracts nothing would make me more giddy than to be able to hype it up and give it a solid rating. Indeed, fair dues, it's better than I remember it being - not quite as sweet nor as weirdly metallic - but it's certainly not good. More of a problem, it's not cheap: for less money you can get better, older options from Hine, Hardy, Camus, etc., and then stuff like D'Ussé or (yes) the Frapin 1270 for around the same price, and then the truly wonderful Fillioux La Pouyade ( • Intro to Cognac Part 2, 42% and Up: Jean F... ) for a couple of extra bucks. Big brand, crappy QPR.
