A craftsman carefully hand carves the design on the roller. It’s made out of wood material and is very heavy. A machine then rolls it along with the felt paper to pick up the ink. Only 12 colors can be used per design. The blotted effect is very similar to potato printing. There are still surface print rollers available in Italy and England.
