I wasn’t supposed to film this. Cameras are strictly forbidden inside the Karanlık Kilise (The Dark Church) in the Göreme Open Air Museum, but I managed to steal a few clips of this magnificent place. This is one of the most famous rock-cut churches in Cappadocia, Turkey. Built in the 11th Century, it is part of a larger monastic complex carved directly into the soft volcanic rock by Byzantine Christians. The church gets its name, "The Dark Church", because it has only one tiny window. For 1,000 years, the interior has received almost no natural light. This lack of UV exposure is the secret to its preservation: while other churches in the area have faded, these frescoes look remarkably vivid, almost as if they were painted yesterday. These caves were inhabited by Christian monks who sought solitude in the surreal landscape of Cappadocia. The frescoes depict scenes from the New Testament, including the Nativity, the Last Supper, and the betrayal of Judas. A Crazy Detail: For centuries after the monks left, this church was used as a pigeon house. While that sounds bad, the layers of pigeon droppings actually covered the walls and protected the art from destruction until it was restored in the 1980s. 📍 Location: Göreme Open Air Museum, Cappadocia, Turkey #Cappadocia #DarkChurch #History #Byzantine #TravelTurkey #Goreme #ArtHistory #HiddenGem
