In this episode I talk about portato, and legato. I grew up doing a lot of portato with my bow arm. I liked how it sounded and did it so much that it became a bad habit! I realized about 15 years ago that portato is an expressive tool that should be used only in the right context, not by default, and that real legato is very important (thank you Joel Smirnoff!) These days, I still love portato, and think it's a beautiful expressive tool, but I try to use it in the right places, when it fits the expression of the music. The portato moments are actually more special and more touching because I play many other passages legato. Legato also projects much, much more than portato, because the vibrations of the violin continue uninterrupted through the slur. Therefore, developing a good legato is essential if you are playing concertos and want to play with a big sound without forcing the sound.
