In this video, I share my deeply personal journey of growing up with Norwegian heritage and how it shaped my childhood, identity, and understanding of culture. My story isn’t just about ancestry or DNA—it’s about real experiences, challenges, and finding a place of safety and growth. Although my biological mom was half Norwegian, and my grandparents were 100% Norwegian, our connection to Norway was mostly through ancestry rather than direct ties. Like many Americans, my family was fascinated by our European roots, but my experience went far beyond just celebrating heritage. As a child, I was sent to Norway, not by choice, and it became a pivotal part of my life. In this video, I talk about: How my childhood in Norway became a sanctuary for me amidst personal struggles at home. My experience in Norwegian schools, excelling academically, and immersing myself in the language and culture. Reflections on the complexities of heritage, identity, and what it truly means to “belong.” The challenges of having a biological mother who exhibited Munchausen by proxy behaviors and how that shaped my early life. Why DNA alone doesn’t define cultural connection or authenticity—Norwegian culture is more than ancestry, and so many non-white people born in Norway are far more Norwegian than I could ever be. Through my story, I hope to highlight the importance of understanding culture beyond genetic heritage and the profound impact that education, safety, and supportive environments can have on a child’s life. This video is both a personal reflection and a discussion about identity, resilience, and finding belonging. If you’re curious about Norwegian culture, heritage journeys, or personal stories of growing up between two worlds, this video will resonate with you.
