Have you ever wondered what happens when a baby takes their first breath? How Do A Newborn's Lungs Work? is the first in a series of videos from the HRB Mother and Baby Clinical Trial Network Ireland, explaining what happens in some common pregnancy and newborn health problems, and how research is trying to answer the questions we still have. Our first video looks at Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn, or PPHN, a condition that can affect roughly 2 in every 1,000 births. PPHN happens when the blood vessels in a newborn’s lungs don't expand as they should after birth. This hinders blood from picking up oxygen in the lungs, and results in low blood oxygen throughout the baby’s body. At the HRB Mother and Baby Clinical Trial Network, we're researching new treatments for PPHN. You can read more about our research and PPHN on our website - www.hrb-mbctni.ie Follow us on Twitter @HRBMumAndBaby And like our Facebook www.facebook.com/HRBMotherAndBabyCTNI/
