Field Editing: An insane challenge to explore the benefits of editing video on your phone

After my Nieman Journalism Fellowship at Harvard, I was asked to create a video column that could run on Nieman Storyboard, a digital outlet run by the Nieman that focused on the craft of storytelling. At the time, I was living on a farm in Maine experimenting with camera gear, so I made Field Testing, a five-part series in which I used the farm as a laboratory for innovations in visual storytelling. For the forth episode, I explored what I called "Field Editing," taking advantage of new mobile video editing tools to process the footage where I captured it. So I came up with a challenge: Film a video about hay in a goat barn and not leave the goat barn until the video was edited. It was a long night.
