Music Inspired by Literary Giants Civic Orchestra of Jacksonville Conductor - Marguerite Richardson Concertmaster - Tim Edwards Videography - Vlad Paje https://civicorchestrajax.org PROGRAM NOTES by Gabi Prieto Gustav Holst - Walt Whitman Overture for Orchestra English composer and educator Gustav Holst was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in 1874. He began his music career as a church organist and choirmaster at age 17. Holst began his studies in composition (and later, trombone) at the Royal College of Music two years later. At the college, he met fellow student Ralph Vaughan Williams and forged a lifelong friendship. When the Walt Whitman Overture for Orchestra was written in 1899, Holst had yet to begin his composition career in earnest; at the time, he was a trombonist and rehearsal pianist for the Carl Rosa Opera Company. This overture reflects Holst's enthusiastic admiration of Whitman's poetry and the principle of embracing optimism as a potent force for change. A thriving creative economy enhances the quality of life for us all. Supported in part by the Merit-Based Cultural Service Grant Program, administered by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville with funding from the City of Jacksonville and our elected officials, we extend our gratitude to all partners who make this possible
