We see a variety of nerve injuries at the practice: in the hand, wrist, elbow, and arm. There are two main types of ways you might present with these injuries: A Contusion or a Laceration. A contusion might be from falling onto your hand, followed by numbness, while a laceration is caused by a cut to the nerve. We actually see many patients who were injured while cutting an avocado, as they sliced down into the middle of their hand while holding it. Generally a contusion is treated with observation, and may heal over time, but it’s better to be sure. If you have any continued numbness, you should see a specialist. A laceration will generally need surgery, so you should see a specialist immediately, because nerve ends tend to retract and atrophy, which can make the repair more difficult or sometimes impossible.
