In this video we take a visit to one of the newest stations in Melbourne. Hawkstowe opened on the 26th August 2018 as one of three new stations built as part of the Mernda Rail Extension, which involved extending the South Morang line 8km north to the new terminus at Mernda. The extension was built to serve some of Melbourne's new growing northern suburbs. In the video we various Metro X'trapolis EMU's, the only type of train on run on the line. Hawkstowe is an unstaffed station but it's still a fairly substantial building, featuring lifts, toilets, semi-enclosed waiting areas, drinking taps, and plenty of seating and shelter. Architecturally the station is similar in style to the new terminus at Mernda but with a much shorter overhead canopy. The open elevated nature of the platforms offer great views of the nearby hills and Plenty River parklands. Unfortunately though it does mean that most of the platform is vulnerable to the weather, especially the wind. Perhaps it would have been better if they went for a side-platform layout to provide better weather protection as originally intended? If you go to this pdf you can see the original designs of the station: https://levelcrossings.vic.gov.au/__d... Fun fact: when planning for the Mernda extension the government originally intended to build two new stations on the line with provision for a third. Mernda and Middle Gorge were chosen at the two new stations with Hawkstowe being the third station left out. However by the time contracts were signed and construction began Hawkstowe station was included in the project. Date: July 2019. Subscribe to ThebusofdoomFSX: https://www.youtube.com/user/Thebusof...
