Another wander through the musical undergrowth… no map, no sat-nav, just instinct and a decent pair of boots. We drift in on a dream with Cupid’s Inspiration, button up a red dress with Alvin Stardust (or is it Shane Fenton?), and take a detour at Watford Gap (mind the service station tea). From the theatrical swirl of Family’s “Burlesque” to Joe Cocker pleading for peace, it’s already one of those nights where anything could happen. There’s Hammond heat from Zoot Money, brass-neck Northern soul attitude from Jean Knight, and pure pop melodrama courtesy of the mysterious Kasenetz-Katz machine. Somewhere in the middle, Crispin St. Peters pipes us along while Jimi Hendrix casually sets fire to the furniture. We cool off with the elegance of the Ramsey Lewis Trio, catch the haunting beauty of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dragonfly”, and close in style with Ben E. King reminding us not to play that song (so of course we do). As ever, it’s soul, psych, pop, blues, oddities and glorious almost-forgotten gems - lovingly dusted off and placed on the turntable.
