This is a presentation recorded at the 2023 joint conference of the Society for Economic Botany and Society of Ethnobiology, held at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia from June 4-9, 2023. #ethnobotany #ethnobiology #science #sciencecommunication *** Building Bridges: Enhancing Science Communication for Public Understanding of Human and Planetary Health Cassandra Quave Ethnobotanical research plays a crucial role in developing an understanding of the intricate relationship between humans and nature and the impact on planetary and human health. This field contributes to community-based conservation and discovery of natural products, which can lead to new pharmaceuticals and compounds that enhance human health and food security. Despite its significance to humanity, the lay public is often unaware of the importance of ethnobotanical research. Effective communication of this science can promote public understanding, encourage funding, and inform public policy while building trust in scientific research. It also facilitates informed decisions related to plant-derived natural products and their use. Various media formats, including podcasts, op-eds, video platforms, newsletters, and trade book publishing, can be used to communicate science to the public. For instance, the Foodie Pharmacology podcast and the Teach Ethnobotany YouTube Channel utilize audiovisual tools to disseminate information globally. These platforms feature experts discussing plant biology, food sovereignty, medicinal plant use, and pharmacognosy. In contrast, trade book publishing, such as with The Plant Hunter (Viking, 2021), can reach a diverse audience through personal narratives of scientific discovery. Effective communication is essential for all scientists, regardless of their career path, in both professional and societal contexts. This presentation will explore the benefits and drawbacks of different media formats, provide evidence-based tips and strategies, and offer practical examples that scientists can utilize to effectively communicate their research to the public.
