They are both joints of the vertebral column They both permit movement of the head (i) BASED ON THE TYPE OF JOINT Atlanto-occipital joint is a condyloid type of synovial joint, while atlanto-axial joint is a plane type of synovial joint (ii) BASED LIGAMENTS THAT REINFORCE THE JOINT The atlanto-occipital joint is reinforced by anterior atlanto-occipital membrane and posterior atlanto-occipital membrane. While atlanto-axial joint is reinforced by the membrana tectora, cruciate ligament, apical ligament and alar ligament (iii) BASED ON ARTICULATING SURFACES The articulating surfaces for atlanto-occipital joint is the occipital condyles, located on either side of foramen megnum and the facet on the superior surface of the lateral masses of the atlas. While the articulating surfaces for atlanto-axial joint is the odontoid process of the axis and the anterior arch of the atlas for median atlanto-axial joint, as well as between the odontoid process and lateral masses of the atlas for lateral atlanto-axial joint. (iv) BASED ON FUNCTION Atlanto-occipital joint permits nodding of the head, such as flexion and extension of the head as occur when indicating approval e.g Yes movement While Atlanto-axial joint permit rotation as occur when indicating disapproval e.g No movement #Atlantooccipital #Atlantoaxial #Atlantooccipitaljoint #Atlantoaxialjoint
