Formed in Perth, Western Australia, in 1978, the band fused power pop, electronic rock, punk, and political edge into a sharp, addictive sound that made them stand out in the Countdown era. Fronted by the unmistakable vocals of Lynda Nutter, The Dugites rose quickly from backing band for Dave Warner to national recognition. After self-financing their first release, they signed with Deluxe Records (distributed by RCA), becoming radio favourites and regulars on Australian television. Their 1980 self-titled debut album The Dugites reached No. 22 on the Australian Albums Chart and achieved gold status, delivering classic tracks like “In Your Car,” “Goodbye,” and “South Pacific.” The band made history when their banned track “Gay Guys” became the first song ever played on Triple J. Follow-up albums West Of The World, No Money, and Cut The Talking produced standout singles including “Waiting,” “Juno and Me,” and “Cut the Talking.” Though The Dugites disbanded in 1984, their influence on Australian rock and new wave remains strong.
