The song Gamble's Guitar was edited for this video. The song in it's entirety can be heard on the cd "Time" by Michael Smith on Flying Fish Records. The interview with Michael Smith took place in Chicago on July 30, 2010 at Chicago's legendary 'Old Town School of Folk Music.' I want to thank that wonderful institution for the use of the room. James Gamble Rogers IV was born on January 31, 1937 in Winter Park, Florida. He began his career as a musician with the 60s folk group 'The Serendipity Singers.' He started performing solo in the early 60s at coffeehouses in the southeast. His popularity grew through the 70s and 80s where he appeared at festivals and concerts throughout the country and appeared on several major television/cable shows. While Rogers was camping at Flagler Beach on October 10, 1991, a frightened young girl ran to him, begging him to help her father, who was in trouble in rough surf. Compromised by spinal arthritis that had been worsening since childhood, Rogers nevertheless grabbed an air mattress and headed into the ocean in a rescue attempt. Both men died in the surf. In honor of his heroism, the Florida Legislature renamed the state park Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach. Gamble influenced many musicians, writers, storytellers and guitarists. He is remembered not only for his extraordinary selflessness but for his talent, musicianship, kindness, and good nature. I can only hope this video tribute adds some worth to his legacy. Gamble's music can be purchased easily online (www.gamblerogers.com).
