LP:Broken Barricades(Expanded and Remastered Edition) Released:April/May'71(US), June 11, '71(UK) Recorded:Feb–March '71 Studio:AIR, London Label:Chrysalis Producer:Chris Thomas Gary Brooker a multi instrumentalist decided to start his own band after The Paramounts with lyricist Keith Reid, and drummer BJ Wilson by April '67 which would soon to be Procol Harum(formed by Robin Trower's Westcliff High School peer Gary Brooker).Procol Harum was an English rock group that formed in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, in '67.Better known for their single that sold 10 million copies "A Whiter Shade of Pale" from their debut LP "Procol Harum"(released Sept '67).A PsyChEdElIc band where Western classical, Classical, meets Blues, R&B, Soul, and Rock. The music is very keyboard(piano/Hammond organ)oriented.A MOODY SOOTHING TRIP of TRIPPY MELODIC instrumentation with it's own uniqueness. One song can be a SLOW BALLAD, while another can have HEAVY GUITARS.Success was a challenge to the group in it's early form, and due to lack of gigs, and money, there were numerous band changes before entering Olympic Studios, London, in April '67 to start recording their debut.Matthew Fisher(played with Screaming Lord Sutch's(David Edward Sutch))who would be chosen to play organ in the group and would play a significant role in Robin Trower's solo career by the early-mid '70's.The name of the group, suggested from management was named after a bands friend(Liz Coombes)male blue Burmese cat.PROCUL HARUN being the name of a cat breed, however the name of the band was misspelled to PROCOL HARUM.My personal intro to Procol Harum was interesting and inspiring.I was maybe 13 years old sitting in my older cousins room(who at the time was a guitar player, which I was fascinated by)knew I liked Robin Trower's more favorable guitar work like Bridge of Sighs '74 LP.He asked if I have ever heard of Trower's old band Procol Harum?I said no, he said listen to this TROWER POWER song!He played "Whisky Train" for me on vinyl from the '72 compilation LP, "The Best Of".I sat there on the edge of his bed astonished not just how great the track was, but how different it sounded from what I was use to hearing Trower do before.Again, from his solo work.I use to get together with my cousin briefly for family get togethers/holidays and I was always excited to hang with him in his room and hear what he was working on.Looking up to an older figure who played guitar in the bedroom I wish I had was my inspiration to start playing myself a few years later when I was 16 years old working my first job@McDonalds('08).Power Failure was an easy one(mainly because it vamps between a couple chords).Drummer B.J. Wilson does a drum solo and overdubs the percussion parts.RIP B.J. Wilson('47-'87).English guitar legend/hero name Robin Trower was in his 1st band the Paramounts in '62-'66, + Robin's short lived trio The Jam, then later replacing original guitarist Ray Royer in Procol Harum after the successful debut release of A Whiter Shade of Pale in '67(Robin did not play on the track, but did play on all the other tracks on the LP).Robin putting down his Gibson SG, Gibson Les Paul, Gibson ES models, and Gretsch guitars to start more of a Jimi Hendrix kind of vibe from '71 to present after borrowing Jethro Tull's Martin Barre's Fender Stratocaster during a soundcheck in '71(when Procol Harum was touring with Tull)Robin yelling in the auditorium "That is it!" and never going back to any other guitar of choice.Robin left Procol Harum in ‘71ish(after some touring with Procol Harum)after completing 5 studio LP's(Procol Harum '67, Shine on Brightly '68, A Salty Dog '69, Home '70, Broken Barricades '71)from '67-April/June '71.Trower made a brief reunion on The Prodigal Stranger LP in '91.After Hendrix’s death at 27 years old on Sept 18, ‘70 Robin and Procol Harum’s lyricist Keith Reid decided to write a tribute to Jimi.”I thought, ‘Well, to make sure I get it right, I’ll sit down and study some of his albums’,” said Trower. Then it was the “atmosphere” of just a few tracks that nailed him-especially “1983…(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)(“Electric Ladyland” released Oct ‘68)and “The Wind Cries Mary”(released on Jimi Hendrix’s debut “Are You Experienced” May ‘67).”From studying I got inspired,” Trower said.”Song For A Dreamer” released on Robin’s 5th LP with Procol Harum “Broken Barricades” ‘71.
