In the excellent commentary track, director John Milius mentions that this scene reminds him of a similar scene in Moby Dick - in that like Conan, Captain Ahab questions what his life is and what it could have been. This scene wasn't in the original 1982 theatrical release, nor was it in any of the early home releases (VHS, laserdisc and initial DVD release). It was added into the movie for the first time in the collector's edition DVD released in 2002. Most subsequent online and blu-ray releases of the movie have included this scene (these versions are referred to as the 'Extended International Cut' with a runtime of 130:30). For details regarding the various international blu-ray releases of the movie, see here - http://dvdcompare.net/comparisons/fil... Some further background about this clip (note - the following are unconfirmed allegations) - one of the film's producers allegedly had an issue with Gerry Lopez (the actor that played Subotai). This producer insisted Gerry's voice be overdubbed throughout the movie with a different voice. In an act of defiance, director John Milius went out and found a voice actor who sounded almost exactly like Gerry Lopez. The voice actor he found is Sab Shimono, who performs the rest of Subotai's dialogue throughout the movie. This particular scene wasn't in the original release, so Gerry Lopez is saying his own lines here without Sab Shimono's voice overdub. It's the only scene in the movie where you can hear Gerry Lopez's actual voice, that's why he sounds a little different. (credit to @lucasplayer for this info)
