Encountering the Numinous | The Idea of the Holy, Rudolf Otto, Philosophy of Religion

A lesser known philosopher of religion, Rudolf Otto, wrote about these ineffable moments of awe, terror, rapture, and delight that many of us experience in nature. They find us when we are not looking; often presenting as streams of sunlight through clouds, trillions of dancing stars, a leviathan-like storm. In that moment we may feel lost in another world, whether we are religious or not, a world of profound mystery and beatitude. These are none other than “numinous experiences” and they speak to the wholly other nature of God, the part which our rational minds cannot grasp. This subject is particularly dear to me because I spent the past year studying Otto’s phenomenological analysis, accounts of mystical experiences from religious saints, and the epistemological relevance. I co-authored a paper with my mentor/professor and presented this topic at the Society for Philosophy of Religion earlier this year. However, I continue to think about these experiences everyday, because they hint at the sacred, which I am all too keen to know. So let this be the beginning of a new journey for all of us. The journey to uncovering why numinous experiences affect us, what sacred and symbolic life they reveal when we examine them for what they are.
