तराना This is how All India Radio sleevenotes on his other records describe Vilayat Hussain Khan: // Ustad Vilayat Husain Khan (1892-1962) is regarded as one of the legendary vocalists of Agra Gharana. His father Ustad Nathan Khan was a court musician of Maharaja Mysore. After his father's death, he came to Jaipur and was adopted as a son by his Grand Uncle Dada Mohd. Baksha Sahib. Initially, Vilayat Hussain Khan was trained and groomed by Ustad Karamat Khan and Kaleem Khan, and later on he came under the tutelage of famous Aftabe Mausiqi Ustad Faiyyaz khan Sahib. His voice was very sonorous and his presentation was melodious. By virtue of his melodious presentation, Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan Sahib, it is said, used to sing in the Majalises and Conferences before the programme of Ustad Faiyyaz Khan. He had a rich repertoire of Hori, Dhrupad, Dhamar, Khyal, Thumri, Tarana, Trivat etc. Shri Vilayat Hussain Khan also got taaleem from Ghulam Abbas Khan grand maternal father of Ustad Faiyyaz Khan. In the year 1914, he came to Bombay and lived under the guidance of his elder brother Mohd. Khan. In Bombay, he trained a number of students like – Anjani Bai Jamulikar Indrabai Badkar Saraswati Bai Smt. Narverkar Pt. Jagannath Bua Purohit and Dutta Bua Ichalkaranjikar etc. Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan was honoured by a number of prestigious State and Academies Awards.
