The Allen House by Frank Lloyd Wright | The Last Prairie House This elegantly designed structure, commissioned for Henry Allen, boasts a roughly square layout that encompasses a spacious pool and garden area, effectively shielding residents from bothersome traffic noise. The house takes on an L-shape, with a two-story east-west wing and a single-story north-south living room, forming two sides of the enclosure. Underneath the bedrooms and a sleeping porch, one can find the culinary and servant facilities, as well as a two-car garage, accessible via a lengthy tunnel gallery. A 3-foot module appears to have influenced the design. Notably, Mr. Allen, standing at a height of 6 feet 8 inches, faced some challenges in his own room, where he couldn't comfortably put on a sweater. The living room features quarter-sawn oak flooring, with a cover board serving as a separation between the wall and the baseboard. Gilding accents the recessed masonry joints, and the ceiling lights are adorned with mulberry paper featuring a Japanese maple-leaf stencil. Radiators are cleverly concealed beneath exterior planters along the main facade. Throughout both floors, you'll find red gum millwork, while cypress is exclusively used for the window sashes. Later, when Mrs. Allen faced mobility challenges, an elevator was installed in place of the rear stairs. In 1971-72, the house and its surrounding grounds underwent a comprehensive renovation. In the late 1980s, the house was bequeathed to Wichita State University, which subsequently sold it to the Allen-Lambe House Foundation. This foundation has diligently restored the house, making it accessible for public viewing by appointment.
