HOW TO MASTER PUTTING SPEED (Phil won the 2006 MASTERS with this putting drill) Phil Mickelson explains and demonstrates the 40, 50, 60 putting drill that he received from Golfing Legend Dave Pelz. This awesome drill has become the foundation of Phil Mickelson's lag putting practiceon Tour. How the drill is played: Phil Mickelson must putt three golf balls from each location (40 feet, 50 feet, 60 feet) and each ball must be putted inside a three foot circle around the hole. If Phil Mickelson doesn't get one of these nine golf balls inside the three foot circle, Phil has to start all over at the beginning at 40 feet. Once all nine putts are inside the three foot circle. Phil Mickelson then must putt one last golf ball from 50 feet to finish the drill. If Phil Mickelson doesn't putt this ball within the three foot circle he has to start all over from the beginning. This Lag putt drill helps Phil Mickelson practice PRESSURE on the putting green and gain a FEEL for the speed of the green. Phil Mickelson explains the secret to his putting stroke. There are two variables in the stroke: The Backstroke length and second is the amount of energy used going forward through the putting stroke. Phil Mickelson limits this to only one variable by keeping the energy going forward through the putting stroke the same for every putt on the green. That leaves Phil Mickelson with only one variable to monitor when putting. This lag putt drill allows Phil Mickelson to build a 40, 50, 60 foot speed reference for later on the golf course. This is why Phil Mickelson practices this drill on uphill sloping greens and on downhill sloping greens before every round of golf he plays. Phil wants to store up as much information as possible before competing on the golf course. This is one of the best putting drills of all time. This lag putt drill helped Phil Mickelson win the 2006 Masters championship. Here is the 3ft drill (2ND BEST DRILL ON YOUTUBE): • The FOUNDATION of Phil Mickelson's SHORT GAME
