WEIRD and WILD in Lanzarote - AirBnFeast

The Canary Islands feel like a bit of an oddity, especially in terms of Spain, and Spanish culture. It feels a lot more like Mexico, in both landscape (Oaxaca area) and in architecture, and even language to some extent - my functional knowledge of spanish looks at the words, and food of choice in this video: Papas (Potatoes) which is distinctly not Spanish from Spain, and is instead a Latin American version. In Spain, it would be Patatas - And I guess this is an indication of why I found Lanzarote to be a little bit strange; a place a part of Spain, but many kilometres away - like this, it seems to have developed a bit of it's own ecosystem. So, a quick rundown on a few things: FOOD The food was good, surprisingly good for an island - typically speaking, I've found island food choices to be quite limited unless they're very close to a significant mainland (like Mallorca). But this was surprisingly good! A great selection of herbs, spices, vegetables and meat. Slightly less fish than I was expecting, but rocking up to the fishmonger on a random day doesnt always work - some local knowledge about fisheries would help. Eating out was also surprisingly cheap with generous portions, just don't expect fancy plating or anything like that. PLACES WE VISITED: Day 1 We arrived in Arricife in the afternoon, and got in our crap car. Our town was Caleta De Famara, with a large surf beach. People were around our age (mid 20s-mid 30s) - a few nice cafes and restaurants. -The viewpoint overlooking the town - Mirador del Risco de Famara. There is also a cave nearby that we didnt go to. Mirador del risco - there's a better view through a paid area (I think) but the view is pretty spectacular from the side of the road too. You can see the entirety of a smaller nearby island. There's a volcano nearby you can hike up as well Volcan de la Corona That night, good quality food and drinks at a bar/restaurant called Restaurante La Mar Cafe Day 2 Pescadería Lanzapesca which is in Arricife. I think typically he has a pretty big selection. But I think I chose eel because I wanted something a bit weird. WENT HOME TO DROP OFF THE FISH, I'm not an animal. -Timanfaya national park - pretty impressive, the bus ride was interesting but kinda makes it a little sterile. You can get chicken cooked in the ground there, but the tourist level was ENORMOUS, not prepared to wait. The surrounding area has a few roads leading out to the volcanoes (initial drone shot) - you can hike around this area as far as I understand. Mirador del Charco de Los Clicos - this was crazy - a short walk from a parking lot to see the crater that opens into the sea. The Green Lagoon is an algae bloom and is discretely fenced off on the beach. In the same town, we ate at Mar Azul. Ocean view, good food, sensible prices. Salinas de Janubio - near the town of La Hoya. There are tours as well. Pretty spectacular! Playa de Papagayo - a long dirt road leads you to a paid carpark. Short walk to the beach from there, and there's a bar overlooking the beach. Also trails out to the peninsula to look over the cliffs and ocean. DAY 3 Teguise: beautiful little town in the middle of the island. Pristine white architecture that reminds me of parts of Mexico, especially with all the cacti. There were a lot of bars there (though the crowd seemed a bit older). Lots of artisanal shops there also. There was also a market- mostly full of crap but worth a wander. We also drove through Costa Teguise which seemed... Kinda shit? Seemed a bit like a retirement village Day 4 Haria - Nice inland town, nestled in the mountains. Theres a long road of switchbacks leading in, and is a pretty fun drive! Playa de Garita - another beach - features briefly. The town nearby (Arrieta) is full of little winding streets, and if I remember correctly, a open water pool - basically a part of the ocean thats walled off so you can swim in it without being pummeled by the full force of the Atlantic ocean. Cactus Garden Five euro entry (from memory), and surrounded by large walls protecting the cacti from the elements. If you're into weird plants, its got a great collection. Barco Fantasma - the beached ship i got the drone shot of. Just search for it on google maps. Its free, behind a rusting fence. But if you want to go, be quick, its rusting into the ocean. Some things we went to see but missed out on due to a sleeping child: Museo Lagomar - google it! Jameos de Agua - we were in the parking lot waiting for the next session, but decided against it. 20 euros. DON'T BOTHER: Puerto del Carmen. Just... don't. We went, just to kill a little bit more time before the flight. Very expensive food, very built up. And I think that's everything!
