Join us for a discussion with Gloria J. Browne-Marshall, author of A Protest History of the United States (ReVisioning History), which explores 500 years of protest and resistance in US history—and what the unsung heroes of social movements past can teach us about navigating our chaotic world. She will be in conversation with Ron Collins. This event is co-hosted by the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice. In this new book from Beacon Press' ReVisioning History series, Browne-Marshall delves into the history of protest movements and rebellion in the United States. Beginning with Indigenous peoples’ resistance to European colonization and continuing through to today’s climate change demonstrations, she expands how to think about protest through sharing select historical moments and revealing the role of key players involved in those efforts. Drawing upon legal documents, archival material, government documents, and secondary sources, A Protest History of the United States gives voice to those who pushed back against the mistreatment of others, themselves, and in some instances planet Earth. Browne-Marshall highlights stories of individuals from all walks of life, backgrounds, and time periods who helped bring strong attention to their causes. Gloria J. Browne-Marshall is a social justice attorney, EMMY Award-winning writer, playwright, and Professor of Constitutional Law and Africana Studies at John Jay College (CUNY). In Fall 2022, she was a Resident Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics and a Harvard Kennedy School Visiting Professor. Prior to academia, Browne-Marshall litigated cases at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), Community Legal Services (Philadelphia), and the NAACP LDF. She was a law clerk at the Eastern District of Pennsylvania as well as the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia. She studied political science in the University of Ibadan (Nigeria) graduate program and later studied social justice at the Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary. Ron Collins is a retired law professor, co-founder of the History Book Festival, and the Lewes Public Library’s Distinguished Lecturer. His latest book is Tragedy on Trial: The Story of the Infamous Emmett Till Murder Trial.
