As part of Joseph Rowntree Centenary and our Rowntree Political Connections & Influences project, The Rowntree Society explored the story of Rowntree’s relationship with Trade Unions during the 1920’s. This public lecture took place on 7th June 2025 at Clements Hall in York, as part of York Festival of Ideas. The three speakers were: Nick Smith, Executive Director of The Rowntree Society: presented new research carried out by the society. This story of the trade unions at Rowntree & Co. in the 1920s is told though the lives of lives of chief shop steward, Fred Hawksby and his assistant, Irene Pickup as well as how Joseph and Seebohm Rowntree dealt with industrial relations in their company inspired by their Quaker values and liberal politics. City of York Deputy Leader, Pete Kilbane: told of his experiences working for Nestlé in the 1990s, following their takeover of Rowntree's. He was involved with the trade union and discussed how the relationship between Rowntree's and their trade unions, which started in the 1920s, continued to his time working at the Cocoa Works site and how this showed the continuing legacy in York of Joseph Rowntree and his family. Dr. Nicola Sleapwood: is a historian with a PhD in nineteenth and twentieth century Quaker business history. She presented some of her research placing Rowntree's relationship with the trade unions into the wider context of other Quaker businesses, and the political changes with the decline of Liberalism and rise of Socialism.
