As a journalist first for ATV, then TVB for 5 years I covered events leading up to the handover and beyond between 1995-2000. On June 30th 1997 the date of Hong Kong's historic handover from British Colony to Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China I recorded the daylong coverage. Here for historians and researchers as well as friends and colleagues is how it looked and felt on that day. The Handover Ceremony Continues with remarks by Chinese President Jiang Zemin starting from 0:33 at 8:00 Prince Charles shakes hands with Chinese President Jiang Zemin. In his private diaries, Prince Charles would refer to the Chinese leadership at the ceremony as "appalling old waxworks". 9:15 the Anchor reports that in a moment the innauguation and swearing-in ceremony for the new government of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong and the Provisional Legislature will take place. She notes that leading British and US Representatives will not attending the swearing-in ceremony of the Provisional Legislature----leaving out the reason. They boycotted the swearing-in ceremony in protest against China's decision to dismantle the democratically elected one from the 1995 elections.
