#cannabis #mentalhealthrisk #schizophrenia The potency of cannabis has increased dramatically over the last two decades, and researchers now warn that this may be fueling a significant rise in cases of schizophrenia. A comprehensive analysis, published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal), highlights the growing public health concern linking high-THC cannabis use to psychosis and schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. “Cannabis from the 2000s is not the same as in 2025,” said coauthor Dr. Nicholas Fabiano, MD, a resident and researcher with the Department of Psychiatry, University of Ottawa. “THC content has increased by 5 times. This is likely a significant driver in the increasing link between cannabis use and schizophrenia.” The study emphasizes that people who consume high-potency cannabis (more than 10% THC), use it frequently, or begin at a young age—particularly males—face a substantially higher risk of developing psychosis. Additionally, individuals with existing mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety are at greater risk. Researchers drew from a wide body of literature and recent large-scale data, including a study of 9.8 million individuals in Ontario. That study revealed that people who visited emergency departments for cannabis use had a 14.3-fold increased risk of developing a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder. For those with cannabis-induced psychosis, the risk jumped to an alarming 241.6-fold. The study highlights the need for early intervention. Stopping cannabis after a first psychotic episode is vital, as continued use raises the risk of relapse. Antipsychotic medications and behavioral therapies like CBT or motivational interviewing can aid recovery. With rising cannabis potency, experts urge better public education and support to reduce mental health risks.
