The Soviet War in Afghanistan: Russia’s Forgotten War | Documentary

Often called “the Soviet Union’s Vietnam War”, the conflict in Afghanistan began at Christmas in 1979 and dragged on for a further nine years, causing the deaths of over 25,000 Soviet soldiers and countless casualties. It was an intervention meant to support the Afghan communist government against the Mujahideen, who believed themselves to be fighting on behalf of God. For the Soviet’s, the invasion in which they were unable to defeat a determined and relentless guerilla enemy, had huge consequences. For Afghanistan, with its lengthy history of interference from foreign powers, the campaign caused death and devastation and only exacerbated the civil conflict already going on between its people. Ultimately the withdrawal of the demoralised Russian forces helped to further the collapse of the USSR.
