I spent the evening at the Sambódromo in Rio de Janeiro capturing the Acadêmicos do Salgueiro Setor 11 rehearsal playing their 2026 samba. Rio Carnaval 2026 is here! The Technical Setup: This is a 360° field recording, it was raining that day so I had the gear umbrella out. I stood with the camera specifically to highlight the repique mor and repique players in the repique de bossa section. You can hear how they handle the bossa calls and see how they signal to each other what is going to happen. The mix of a regular 12" repique and the bigger sized 10" repique mor sounds very powerful when you are standing there because they are covering such a wide frequency range. It's really punchy! At 04:12: The Mestre Guilherme is near the camera and signals the violin break. You can hear the unision hits and interplay between the bateria and the tamborins as well as the repique de bossas responding as well. 04:49 they signal the next paradinha, which actually has a violin in it! 05:46 the top of the samba comes back around and you see Salgueiro's signature virada 3 06:00 the pulinho.
