This episode is about choosing emotion over perfection. Last week, I talked about my passion project: photographing other photographers on black & white film and why I’m more interested in capturing character, feeling, and authenticity than picture perfect beauty. In a time where AI can generate flawless skin, perfect lighting, and polished headshots in seconds, film photography feels like a quiet rebellion. Film is imperfect. Dust, grain, light leaks, exposure mistakes, those flaws force honesty. And when you’re photographing people, honesty matters. In this episode, I bring you along as I photograph Jess (Images by Jess) on film. We first met shooting the same wedding, and instantly it felt like we’d been friends forever. Jess is a photographer who captures emotion deeply images that make you feel like you were there. Now, I wanted to turn the camera on her with that same intention. Instead of rushing into perfect light, we slow down. We drink coffee. We talk story. Because before I can photograph someone’s essence, I need to know who they are. This is a reminder that portraits aren’t about beauty. They’re about joy, peace, faithfulness, wonder, and vulnerability. If you’re a photographer—or just someone who values real moments—I hope this resonates. 📍 Follow Jess on IG: @imagesbyjess 📸 Shot on black-and-white film 🖨 Images are meant to be printed, held, and felt 📍 Follow Me on IG: @sheadonphotography 00:00 – Introduction Welcome back + recap of the film portrait passion project 00:33 – Emotion vs Perfection in Photography Why character and feeling matter more than beauty AI, Headshots, and the “Perfect” Look Thoughts on AI photography and why it feels hollow 01:10 – Why Film Forces Authenticity Imperfections, grain, dust, and honest images 01:50 – The Five Elements of a Powerful Portrait Joy, peace, faithfulness, wonder, vulnerability 02:09 – Meeting Jess (Images by Jess) How we met and why I was drawn to her work Why Her Work Feels So Personal Emotion, storytelling, and connection in her images 03:55 – Coffee Before Cameras Why we talked story instead of rushing to shoot Getting Comfortable Before the Portrait Breaking tension and building trust Why Knowing the Person Matters You can’t capture essence without connection 6:00 – Images Are Meant to Be Printed Why I print my work and reflect on each image 06:30 – The First Frame Shooting the first portrait outside the coffee shop 25:00 wrap up
