Problem statement: A two stage process is used to recover 95wt% methanol solution from a feed stream containing 40wt% methanol and the balance water. The feed first enters a flash drum, where a vaporous, methanol-rich stream is produced and sent into a distillation column. A 100kghr-1 pure water stream also enters the flash drum for temperature regulation. The bottoms stream from the flash drum is 96wt% water. The distillation column has a bottoms stream of pure water, with a mass flowrate of 225kghr-1. 95% of the methanol in the feed is recovered in the distillate stream. Please determine all the mass flowrates and compositions in this process. In doing so, please: Produce an initial degrees of freedom analysis Write out the equations and calculations you develop in solving for the unknown values Produce a labelled mass flow block diagram, showing the determined flowrates and compositions of the streams
