SERPIC - A research and innovation project of the ERA-NET Cofund AquaticPollutants

Compounds of emerging concern (CEC) are man-made pollutants that can be found quite often in wastewater. Examples for typical CECs are residues of pharmaceuticals, pesticides or antimicrobial resistant bacteria. CECs pose health risks both for the aquatic life as well as for humans when these pollutants get into our crops e.g. via irrigation water. Usual treatment processes of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) do not remove these pollutants sufficiently. Therefore, the research project SERPIC is developing an additional treatment process to reduce CECs. The SERPIC technology is based on nanofiltration and electrochemical oxidation processes. The goal is to reduce the CECs from WWTP effuent to a level that it can be used for irrigation or for discharge into rivers.
