BENARAS GHARANA | The blend of traditions, innovations and cultural significance is the cornerstone of Benaras Gharana. Originating from Varanasi, Benaras Gharana is known for its unique interpretations of Raaga’s. One of the rare instances where the Gharana encompasses vocal, instrumental and dance. The gharana is known for its intricate ornamentation, expressive singing style and improvisation styles. Even though the Gharana incorporates various forms, it has a strong foundation in Dhrupad and Khyal styles. Benaras embodies a rich musical tradition that reflects both, the spiritual and cultural essense of the region. Pandit Ramsahay ji is considered the originator of Banaras Gharana. Pandit Sahay was a disciple of Mondu Khan. Pandit Ramsahay’s father’s name was Prakash Maharaj ji, who was a tabla player who accompanied the dance. Most importantly, Benaras Gharana has played a vital role in music education, with many students learning the nuances of vocal techniques and performance practices, thus ensuring the continuity of the tradition.
