Founding partner and creative director of Mecanoo Architects, Francine Houben has played a key role in transforming Taiwan’s southern city of Kaohsiung, from designing the world’s largest performing arts center under one roof to an ingenious multimodal transit hub. On her first visit almost two decades ago, Houben was shocked by the port city’s pollution and traffic, but also captured by her local partners’ ambitions to make Kaohsiung a 'healthy city'. Since then, her designs, echoing natural forms and cultural heritage, have played no small part in Kaohsiung’s urban rejuvenation. Houben guides us through the joys and challenges of building in Taiwan, her sources of inspiration and why her designs bring people together. 📺 For more on Taiwanese culture, arts and creative industries, visit our playlist: • Taiwan Creative | CONNECTED #CONNECTEDTaiwanCreative #TaiwanCreative 00:00 Introducing Francine Houben and her Taiwan projects 01:20 The challenge of redesigning Kaohsiung’s main station 02:40 Rethinking the station’s scale and informality 03:48 Designing a subtropical, open-air mobility hub 05:01 How light shapes public space in Kaohsiung 06:20 Skylights, nightlife and informal city culture 07:10 Francine’s early impressions of Taiwan 08:00 Kaohsiung’s transformation from industrial to livable 09:00 Banyan trees as inspiration for Weiwuying 10:08 The station canopy and green roof concept 11:00 Designing a hill-like roof connecting city layers 11:43 Lantern ceilings inspired by local temples 12:40 Architecture that keeps nature in view 12:55 How Taiwan’s cities changed over 20 years 14:27 Balancing style with culture and climate 15:40 Designing for context, not signature style 16:24 How Taiwan reshaped her creative approach 17:10 Why her work resonates in Taiwan 18:13 Collaborating with local engineers and shipbuilders 19:40 Making public buildings for the public 21:20 Designing megaprojects in Taiwan vs. other countries 22:00 Architecture as collaboration with clients 23:04 Buildings that become stages for public life 24:38 The next major project: Taoyuan Station 2033 25:44 What she hopes people feel in her buildings #Kaohsiung Find us on socials: Instagram: / connected.taiwanplus Threads: https://www.threads.com/@connected.ta...
