http://www.HispanicHeritage.org The Hispanic Heritage Awards were established by The White House in 1987 to commemorate the creation of Hispanic Heritage Month in America. The Hispanic Heritage Awards are considered among the “highest honor for Latinos by Latinos” and recognize notable Latinos who have made a positive impact on America, and the world, in various fields. This year the Hispanic Heritage Award Legend Award was awarded to Angelica Maria. Angelica Maria (born Angelica Maria Harman Ortiz in New Orleans, LA) was the only daughter of musician Arnie Hartman and Angelica Ortiz. She traveled frequently as a child because of her father's musical career. She began her own career at ten when she appeared in the movie Mala Semilla with Pedro Infante's backing band, Perla de Occidente. She recorded her first album at the age of 17 and in 1960 she was in her first soap opera, eventually going on to appear in more than a dozen, including Cartas de Amor and El Callejón del Beso. Her first big hit came in the mid-'60s with "Eddie, Eddie." That song was a Spanish-language rock song, but by the '70s she became known for her ranchera ballads, including "Tú Sigues Siendo el Mismo." Aside from her recording career, she also found time to work in television, theater, and to appear in more than 60 films.
