Isaac Schaad, Subtle Shifts The title has a double, if not triple meaning. Primarily, it conveys the chaotic, mischievous energy of the character called Subtle Shift in the play Clyomon & Clamydes (c. 1577), attributed to George Peele. Subtle Shift lives up to his name by continually changing allegiance, although his shifts are occasionally far from subtle. All this is reflected musically by frequent modulations of varying degrees of subtlety. The piece also necessitates a great deal of shifting of left-hand position, especially in the upper strings. Subtle Shift opens with an arresting, tutti gesture, which is followed swiftly by the first subject in A minor. The lyrical second subject, in the tonic major, resembles Dvořák’s writing in works such as the Serenade for Strings. These two subjects are developed and juxtaposed throughout the remainder of the piece, in keys as varied as C major and Bb minor. The bold return of the first subject in its original key brings the piece to a triumphantly chaotic conclusion.
