The Purcell School: Tomorrow’s Artists Today March 1st 2020, Purcell Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall Students from The Purcell School share their love of Beethoven, Stravinsky and Shostakovich Programme: String Quartet Op 18 No. 2 (I Allegro) - Beethoven Sebastian Berg (Violin), Hilde Jentsch (Violin), Catherine White (Viola), Anna Maclean (Cello) Duo Concertant - Stravinsky Lina Jukneviciute (Violin), Yumeka Nakagawa (Piano) Five Pieces for Flute, Violin and Piano - Shostakovich Sofiia Matviienko (Flute), Alexander Gonzalez Pavlova (Violin), Yenglik Karassartova (Piano) Piano Concerto No. 2 (I Allegro con brio) - Beethoven Shiwen Chen (Piano Soloist), The Purcell Middle School Orchestra ——— On Sunday 1st March, The Purcell School presented a whole day of stunning music-making in memory of Oliver Knussen, with four concerts given by over 100 outstanding Purcell students, staff, alumni and guests at the Southbank Centre. Oliver was a Purcell student before he became the famous, beloved giant of the music world. These programmes honour his memory and all he did to promote music in the school, in the UK and throughout the world. Three daytime recitals took place in the Purcell Room followed by an orchestral concert in the QEH in the evening, showcasing music with links to Knussen, as well as Beethoven’s 250th anniversary plus Sonya Knussen, the composer’s daughter and a Purcell alumna, narrating Britten’s ‘Young Person’s Guide’. Based in Hertfordshire, just outside of London, the School provides a rounded education with music at its heart to around 180 talented students, most of whom go on to the top conservatoires and colleges for music, often with scholarships.
