Masters of landscape photography join forces for exhibition ′소나무′ 배병우와 ′솔섬′ 케나

Two internationally recognized photographers have come together for a special exhibition that makes your everyday surroundings look like they′re from another world. Yim Yoonhee joins us for this story. Photographers Bae Bien-u and UK born photographer Michael Kenna are both well-recognized in the world of photography. And now an exhibition has put the works of these two masters side by side. Take a look. Bae Bien-u first gained international recognition when he sold one of his photographs to Elton John. Since then, Bae, who specializes in capturing the beautiful pine trees and landscapes of Korea, has maintained his fame, continuing to attract some of the world′s most famous people to his exhibitions. Bae, nicknamed Mr. Pine Tree, has now joined forces with one of the most influential photographers of the modern age, Michael Kenna. Their works share striking similarities, and now you can see them displayed side by side at Gallery Kong in central Seoul. "The foundation of my work is landscapes, and Michael Kenna works in traditional black and white. The photos are absolutely beautiful." In fact, both photographers work in black and white, and both have mastered the fine art of photography, making use of all the elements. To the naked eye, the landscapes may seem common, but seen through the lenses of these photographers, the images become almost surreal. "It takes a lot of regular practice, a lot of hard work. Yes, these are all common landscapes. Absolute beauty is in the commonplace." The two artists may have similarities, but they also have their own unique artistic sensibilities, their own way of portraying the beauty of this world. Photographer Bae is famous here for his pictures of Korean landscapes, especially those containing pine trees, whereas Kenna appears to have captured landscapes from around the world. Kenna worked in France for the majority of his career, but in the 80s, he made a trip to Asia, where he picked up quite a bit of inspiration, learning about the sense of zen and simplicity, which you see evidence of in his future works. But he previously worked in Korea, and if I remember correctly one of the photos he took here caused a bit of controversy. Yes, Kenna took a very famous photograph of a pine tree landscape here in Korea. More specifically, it′s a picture of Solseom , which is a small island in Gangwon-do province. Well, in 2010, a picture used by Korean Air for a television ad... looked almost exactly like Kenna′s picture. The photo was taken by an amateur photographer, and there were lawsuits involved, but in the end it was decided that there was no creative infringement, however there were concerns about the future repercussions. But at least something positive came of the incident,... and that′s the now-recognized status of Solseom , which was at one point even at risk of being destroyed.
