I had been looking for a small 1940s bike lamp for some time and missed out on a few on an auction site. I managed to find this one in a small antique shop in Mablethorpe Uk. It cost just £6, Bargain. This Bike Lamp was used during the Blitz and came with a red tinted light diffuser and a hood to shield the light from Aircraft. I had intially thought because it was small it would be a nice easy restoration and easily completed within a week. The Lamp had other ideas. Once I started stripping it down the first problem showed itself as part of the top was missing, Look before you Leap springs to mind. This presented a big challenge for me as I had no welding skills and the metal is very thin making it an awkward repair. I had a choice at this stage to either scrap it or find a way to repair it. I chose to repair it with a 2 part epoxy designed to bond metal, This was not really how I would have liked to repair it but I like the way it turned out. Another problem I encountered which I didn’t think about at the time was the batteries are no longer made so I had to think outside the box and adapt a Pj996 Lantern Battery which turned out ok. I had originally chose to repaint it Brown but this colour would not have been used on another project so would not have been cost effective. The Green is a bit more versatile.
