Giovanni Battista Vitali (1632-1692): Partite sopra diverse sonate per il violone. Baroque Ensemble "Transylvania" - 25 years anniversary concert 4/7 Ciprian Câmpean - violoncello Erich Türk - harpsichord Concert recording from July, 21st, 2014 Mediaș, St. Margret Evangelical Church 25 years ago, the Baroque Ensemble „Transylvania” was founded by two dedicated flutists from Cluj: István Nagy (1942-2018) and Zoltán Majó. The very first concert took place in Werkendam (the Netherlands) in 1995, as a trio formed by the two mentioned founding members and the cellist István Dallos. The organisers, the Dutch family Jantine & Hans Kamp had the idea of establishing a foundation in order to organize more concerts for the ensemble and raise at once funds for humanitarian projects in post-revolutionary Romania. During the following 10 years, the Kamp family organized hundreds of concerts in the Netherlands. The ensemble began to play increasingly often also in Germany, Austria, Hungary and in their homeland, Romania. Over time, the composition of the ensemble changed. From 1996 on, instead of cellist István Dallos, the harpsichordist Erich Türk joined the group. In 1998, it became a quartet, as the bassoon player Florin Cîrlejan got involved. From 2000 on, the cellist Ciprian Câmpean took the bass, and after the retirement of István Nagy in 2008 the present composition was achieved by appointing the violinist Mátyás Bartha. Aspiring for historically informed performance practice, the ensemble made efforts to purchase and play period instruments, a goal realized until 2000. Apart from recorder and harpsichord, which were present right from the beginning, the ensemble featured baroque transverse flute and baroque bassoon, and the current string players are using baroque violoncello, baroque violin, as well as violino piccolo and viola d´amore. From the start, the Baroque Ensemble „Transylvania” dedicated itself especially to its local early music. The members researched to discover early music from the geographical area of today´s Romania and played pieces from different period manuscripts and collections, including also courtly music or urban folklore. Furthermore, contemporary composers from Cluj, the musician´s home town, dedicated them pieces. Thus, they premiered works by Hans Peter Türk, Adrian Borza, Dan Voiculescu, Adrian Pop and Cornel Ţăranu. The period instruments are represented characteristically through the performed compositions and arrangements. The ensemble successfully performed in concerts and festivals across Romania as well as abroad (Austria, UK, Portugal, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Turkey, Moldova, Serbia and Hungary), totalizing more than 600 concerts. Their achievements are confirmed by four CDs and one documentary DVD about Transylvanian music, as well as radio and TV broadcasts. The present special edition CD aims to call up some highlights from the ensemble´s rich activity.
