South Carolina is pushing what could be the strictest abortion ban in the country. The 'Unborn Child Protection Act' (SB 323) would allow prosecutors to charge people who get abortions — or help others get them — with murder, a crime that can carry up to 30 years in prison or even the death penalty. The bill would also define birth control as an abortifacient, ban contraceptives statewide, and eliminate exceptions for rape or incest. The legislation was modeled on what the National Right to Life — one of the largest anti-choice groups in the country — calls 'model legislation,' which they hope will eventually become national law. SC's Medical Affairs Committee — a group of 17 legislators, only one of whom is a woman — held a public hearing this week where people testified for and against the bill. Tensions ran high, and some demonstrators were removed by security. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster signed the state's already strict ban into law in 2023. Even he says this goes too far: 'I think that we have arrived over the years in a good place in South Carolina that has the support of the vast majority of the people, and that’s a good resting place.
