Renhe Palace originated from the Erlin ancestors who came to Taiwan to reclaim and settle in Zhangzhou and Quanzhou. Following the belief habits of their ancestral homeland, they built a Mazu Temple in Erlin to worship the Heavenly Virgin, and became the center of belief in Erlin area. The earliest record of the building itself is the inscription on the first reconstruction in the 20th year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (1815 AD). Due to the age of the palace and temple, the appearance of the temple was peeling off. The local elders and gentry proposed to expand it. After 8 years of reconstruction work, it was completed in the 20th year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (1815 AD). Renhe Palace is deeply loved by residents from all over the world because of the efficacious experience of Erlin Mazu, and it is full of incense all the year round. Believers in the Japanese era feel that it has been a hundred years since the previous reconstruction. The long-term wind and frost have invaded, the eaves are peeling off, and the worship pavilion is narrow and old amidst the prosperity of the streets. Therefore, local people petitioned the authorities for permission to rebuild, and then raised funds for the construction with local believers. According to the inscription on the reconstruction, the restoration of the Renhe Palace still maintains the original appearance of the Qing Dynasty. Because the temple is adjacent to the street, it was set back, and 2 sections of adjoining land were newly purchased. Ear gates were added to the main hall. After the completion of the Renhe Palace, it witnessed the whole story of the "Erlin Incident". Because it is located in the downtown area and the center of faith, the temple in front of the Renhe Palace became a place where sugarcane farmers in the Erlin area gathered to fight for their rights. The establishment of the "Erlin Sugarcane Farmers Association" by local gentry, doctors, intellectuals, and sugarcane farmers such as Dr. Li Yingzhang and Liu Songfu (1898-1971 AD) was the harbinger of Taiwan's farmers' organizations. Taiwanese farmers have organized to resist the exploitation of the sugar factory backed by the Japanese colonial government. In September 1925, the Erlin Sugarcane Farmers Association held another farmers meeting. On October 22 of the same year, under the protection of the Japanese police, the sugar factory forcibly harvested sugarcane at a low price. A conflict broke out between the sugarcane farmers, the police, and sugar factory harvesters. The angry sugarcane farmers grabbed the police sword and beat seven Japanese policemen in the chaos. Dr. Li Yingzhang, the leader of the Agricultural Association, and nearly a hundred sugarcane farmers were arrested and many were sentenced. The Renhe Palace has undergone a total of four constructions. It was designated as a third-level historic site by the Ministry of the Interior in 1985. However, it was damaged during the 921 Earthquake. It was restored by the government the following year until it was completed in 2002.
