In the latest update from the election commission, independent candidates have secured 101 seats, with 96 of them being supported by Imran Khan's PTI. PMLN, led by Nawaz Sharif, has won 75 seats, while the Pakistan People’s Party holds the third position with 54 seats. Surprisingly, the Karachi-based party MQM has made a comeback, winning 17 seats. The February 8 vote covered 266 National Assembly seats, and a simple majority of 134 seats is needed for a party or coalition to take control. Unfortunately, one seat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was canceled due to a candidate's death, and results from another Punjab constituency are on hold. The Election Commission has also suspended results for 10 national assembly and 16 provincial assembly seats due to court-issued stay orders. Notably, three national assembly seats, including ones claimed by PTI's independent candidates, are under scrutiny. A stay order is also affecting a national assembly seat in Mansehra, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, challenged by Nawaz Sharif. With these legal complications, it seems there will be a delay in the formation of the next government. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dawn News English is your window into the latest news, insight, and features from South Asia and beyond.
