Viability Scan: Early Pregnancy Reassurance Our Specialist Sonographer in Fetal Medicine, Ms Shaz Khojasteh, walks us through the first scan performed during early pregnancy called Viability scan. They are designed to confirm the viability of the pregnancy, date the pregnancy, confirm the location of the pregnancy, and confirm the number of embryos. Viability scans are routinely performed between 6-9 weeks of pregnancy, but the best time to have one is after 7 weeks, when the baby's heartbeat can be clearly seen on the ultrasound examination. Viability scans are often performed earlier in pregnancy if there are concerns about the location of the pregnancy. Prior to the ultrasound, the dates are calculated based on the date of the last menstrual cycle. However, if the cycle is irregular or longer in length, the dates can be altered. A viability scan can more accurately date the pregnancy and give parents-to-be more reassurance prior to the NHS routine 12-week scan.
