Part 2 of our Canyonlands adventure covers the return route from Devil’s Kitchen, featuring two of the Needles District’s most iconic obstacles—the descent down Silver Stairs and the technical climb back up Elephant Hill. Our group of seven friends in five rigs began the outbound leg by dropping down the Silver Stairs, a layered sandstone descent that demands careful spotting, low-speed control, and precise placement. From there, the trail winds back toward Elephant Hill, which is every bit as challenging on the return. The climb includes steep ledges, tight switchbacks, sharp breakovers, and the signature narrow rock corridors that make this trail one of the most unique in the National Park system.
