ECMO Outcomes in COVID-19 Patients

In this brief video, Dr. Robert Bartlett and Dr. Ryan Barbaro of the University of Michigan briefly describe the effort to study the effect of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment on critically ill patients with #COVID19. The results of a rapid international study involving more than 1,000 patients show that survival among COVID-19 patients treated at experienced ECMO centers is similar to survival for patients treated with ECMO in past pandemics and for other forms of acute respiratory distress syndrome. The study was made by possible by ELSO, the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, and its COVID-19 Registry.
