Loving Deads: House of The Dead EX is a spinoff of The House of The Dead series featuring an assortment of mini games, along with a compelling story line to boot. The game was a Japan exclusive. Although, the game's BIOS did support English as well. The game's story follows a hapless pair of zombies, Zobiko and Zobio, who fall in love and attempt to escape the clutches of their creator and master Dr. Curien. Zobio was originally a zombie guard ordered to watch over Zobiko after she was imprisoned by Dr. Curien. The pair battle for their escape against Dr. Curien's most formidable creations, including Justice (The 4 armed beast who was the first boss in HOD4), The Star (A sword wielding levitating humanoid who happens to be the creation of genetic engineer Caleb Goldman), The Empress (A bizarre creature that wields a pair of chainsaws), and The World (The giant insect like boss creature from HOD4, who used ice as his primary weapon). At one point in the game The Star encounters Zobiko and Zobio, and professes his love for Zobiko; only to be denied by her. Despite facing multiple battles against the Star throughout the game, he's ultimately the one who ends up saving both Zobiko and Zobio from being captured Dr. Curien. After the final boss battle, another boss emerges strapped with a bomb. As the explosion ensues, its thought that Zobiko and Zobio were now dead. The Star reports back to Dr. Curien that the pair is now gone; as Curien anguishes over the loss of Zobiko, a zombie he modelled after his late wife. As stated before, the entire game consists of mini game challenges, including obstacle courses and target shooting challenges among others. Challenges include stomping spiders, capturing zombies with a trap door, fighting off a sumo zombie, breaking out a zombie's bad teeth so he'll spare you. Other challenges include a bowling stage, following a rocker zombie on stage with spot lights, a spot the difference zombie like challenge (spot the odd one out), an apple picking challenge, and there's even a stage where you're tasked with outmaneuvering pies being thrown at you, among others. Both a light gun and pedals are used depending on the challenge at hand. For instance, the obstacle course like stages typically make use of the peddle instead of the light gun. Each mini game is guided by a time limit with a count down timer. Players are tasked with fulfilling the objectives before the clock runs out, or lose a life if they don't. The game has somewhat branching path narratives, giving players the ability to choose among multiple sets of challenges in each stage, though the boss battles and story line remain the same, regardless of which paths you choose. There's enough challenges that one could play through the game multiples times and get a different experience with each successive play. Those multiple choice challenges gave the game considerable replay value. All being said, Loving Dead's was an interesting twist on the House of The Dead series, and with a compelling story line to boot. The story of a paid of zombie lovers on the run from Dr. Curien really gave the game depth. Both Zobiko and Zubio also appeared as playable characters in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing; and they even get married in the game's sequel. Sadly, the game never saw any releases outside of Japan, and was never ported to any consoles as of yet.
