FROM THE VAULT: 40 years ago this week the General Motors president came to Bowling Green, Kentucky to dedicate the Corvette Plant. You will see Kentucky's Lieutenant Governor Martha Layne Collins to his left while he explained how important it was to maintain the mystique that surrounds the Corvette brand. The factory was originally built by the Chrysler Corp. to manufacture industrial air conditioners before shutting down. When it opened the factory rolled off 15 cars an hour and the first Corvette came off the assembly line in June 1981. Governor John Y. Brown Jr. drove it during a ceremony.
